Millennium Mills

The Vision For The Millennium Mills

The Millennium Mills building will be transformed into a modern and contemporary 21st century building while keeping the traditional 1905 concrete exterior façade. There will be a fluid integration between new and old with a modern interior and original exterior, blurring the boundaries between new and old. The 10 storey building will be converted into 5 level mixed use building illustrated  below. An ideal place to EAT.WORK.PLAY.

EAT.

WORK.

PLAY.

DESIGN OBJECTIVES FOR THE  MILLS

ENVIRONMANTALLY SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

Ensure environmental consciousness throughout the development whilst taking into account impacts on the environment pre and post construction. Replacing lost vegetation and providing green space open to be used by the public whilst protecting habitats and biodiversity.

SOCIALLY SUSTAINABLE AND INCLUSIVE

There will be the provision of facilities and services suitable to meet the needs of different age groups, genders, class and race.

ACCESSIBLE

Pedestrianize the area further with  more suitable and accessible cycle routes to improve connectivity.

ARCHITECTURAL EXEMPLAR

Create an architectural exemplar development with contemporary 21st century architectural design of buildings and landscaping improving the legibility.

STRENGTHEN COMMUNAL RELATIONSIPS

Through the provision of shared spaces which promote interaction between members of the public and discourage antisocial behaviour.

To embrace an active waterfront the Millennium Mills facing waterside will be utilised as public accessible to all designated picnic spaces and private hire picnic spaces along the water front.

The free Open space with designated picnic spots can bemused during the warmer months for familys, friends or the general public to make use out of.

There will also be Inexpensive picnic spots along the water edge to enjoy a more private picnic with scenic views of the water. Some more expensive picnic spaces will also include dining igloos suitable for more formal or fancier lunch/dinners similar to Londons iconic dome/igloo restaurants.

DESIGN FEATURES

USE OF LARGE WINDOWS

Through the architectural design of the centre we will influence offenders decisions in relation to preceding criminal acts. This will be done mainly through the use of large windows which will allow those using the building to act as agents of surveillance as they are able to see onto the public space and  identify any deviant behaviour. As well as this, it will add to the  richness and improve the architectural value of the site .

The South-facing windows  will allow quality daylight to provide adequate lighting into the building without the use of electrical appliances. In turn having a positive impact on the ecological footprint of the building. The South-facing windows will also allow the most winter sunlight into the community centre but little direct sunlight during the summer, which limits heat gain during warm months while increasing heat gain during cold months regulating the building temperature without relying heavily on gas and electricity whilst saving money .

ECOLOGICAL FEATURES

The millennium mills building will be high in architectural value and ecologically sustainable. This  will be done by following a contemporary and modern approach to the design of the centre.

The buildings designed with the impacts on the environment in consideration through the use of:

1. Solar panels

2..Water collection system

3.Provision of gardens

4.Socially sustainable through inclusive events, encouraging integration between all backgrounds

5.Large glass windows- less need for electrical lighting

6.Exceptional insulation- reduce waste energy

7. café with locally sourced foods

The new Mills aims to increase legibility as it will be an exemplar building which will be recognized for its architectural design.

ACCESIBILITY

- To make the building more accessible to all there is also a small designated parking space available for those who are only able to use motor vehicles as a mode of transport such as for wheelchair users (disabled parking available)

-within the building there are both stairs as well as A wheelchair ramps to ensure the building is inclusive and suitable for all.

PARK / PLAY AREA

Provision of an outdoor interactive play area encouraging outdoor play. Creates an Inclusive community with facilities for all ages
